A Transcript of Delores Brewer’s Newest Television Ad

“Several years ago I was attacked and raped in my home by the Garden District rapist.
I refused to allow it to destroy my integrity.
I helped put the rapist in jail and rebuilt my life.

In the first primary, I was also unfairly attacked by my opponent, Jacques Roy, but his untruthful attacks only make me fight harder and stand stronger.
Jacques Roy has disrespected our community.
I want your vote, but first, our community deserves respect. “

  1. Delores, will you please withdraw with whatever shred of dignity you still have? Your candidacy has become the biggest joke around Cenla. I supported you in the primary, but my dear, you are out of control. Please spare yourself, your family and all the citizens of Alexandria any more of this insanity!

  2. I dunno, rape, then “attacked” by Roy for lying. Those two things are really comparable–NOT! Horrible, just horrible. A final nail in the “coffin” that is called the Brewer campaign, IMHO.

  3. It is horrifying to me that a person would compare a violent rapist to Jacques. I am new to this game, but how can this be?!!

  4. Do we know for a fact if this is true? Was she truly raped? If so, the woman apparently never got the counseling she needed. She is definitely going through some sort of mental breakdown to even consider using this and then stating that Jacques is the one disrespecting us. What does she think she is doing?

  5. Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, there is another woman here in Cenla who was the victim of an attack. She successfully ran for public office. I don’t recall her using the fact of her attack to gain a sympathy vote. I would really like to hear her “take” on Delores Brewer’s newest commercial.

  6. Any commercials in the can about all of us bein DISRESPECTED by a billion dollar utility company coming into OUR house and who has SCREWED all of us without our consent? Any outrage about that one? Bet not.

  7. Delores, what were you thinking to bring up such a tragic issue such as rape into this campaign. How dare you metion Mr. Roy’s name in your commerical. Do you really think the women of Alexandria want this brought up again after all these years. DB, you justed showed you have a lot of class—all Low. Jacques Roy has the respect of the city not you.

  8. Would a sign of disrepect be lying to the public and the City Council on tv, allowing your family to profit from your position within the City, trying to make extra money oneself by bidding for the Housing Authority contract, attack an entire profession, declare that certain contracts entered into bu your emloyer were illegal yet did nothing at the time, and compare your opponent to a rapist? I for one find Delores Brewer is disrespecting the City, not Roy.

  9. It is fairly well known to those of us who grew up here that Delores was one of the victims of the Garden District Rapist. We also remember that then Detective Tommy Cicardo was the one who solved that case. That’s probably one of the major reasons that Delores supported Tommy for Police Chief. And thats fine. Bur to use that in a commericial the way that she did is disrepectfull to herself.

  10. I think this is the most bizarre and offensive campaign commercials I have ever seen. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.

Is this really a Roy Fletcher commercial? It doesn’t seem like one, but at this point, if I were Roy Fletcher, I’d drop Brewer like a hot potato.

  11. That has to be the most disturbing commercial I have ever seen run during a campaign. As a woman, Mrs. Brewer should be ashamed of herself. To compare such a violent, uncontrollable attack to your personal being to Mr. Roy’s so called “attacks” on you in the primary, is simply absurd. It is disgusting to me. Shame on anyone who was involved in making that commercial. But mostly, SHAME ON YOU MRS. BREWER…

  12. What WERE they thinking????? bizarre, bizarre, bizarre. I don’t think anyone will buy this weird analogy………..I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. Quit, woman!

  13. I just saw the commercial, and immediately checked to see if it was discussed here. It looks as though my impression is fairly universal with the readers here. I hope Jaques will avoid responding in any way at all. Delores said she would not engage in negative campaigning in the runoff, but that is all she has done. That she would run such an ad- indeed perform such an ad- is shameful. Rape is a heinous violation of a person, and the person speculating that Mrs. Brewer may need more counseling is probably right on. With judgement like this in her campaign, I do not trust what her judgement as mayor might be.

  14. How can she expect to be the mayor of a city when she is totally out of touch with reality? I find it hard to believe that there wasn’t someone associated with her campaign with enough common sense to try to put the brakes on and think that commercial through.

  15. I have never responded to a campaign ad before but i just cannot let this one slip by. Mrs. DB like to compare Jacques to Edwin Edwards. It is she that’s using the old political process of throwing as much mud as you can and raising smoke screens. Get in at whatever cost and settles things after you win, that’s the old political techniques game

  16. You people are all out of touch with this campaign.

Jacques Roy attacked Delores and called into question her integrity. When you attack someone with lies and spin (thank Bridgette Brown for Jacques ammo) it’s stripping them of what takes many decades to earn.

If you people cannot see the connection then you are delousional and true loyalist to Jacques. Keep in mind that if someone you know was raped physically and then some young kid tells the community that this person is a liar how you would feel. Lying about a person so as to destroy their image is a form of rape. It is rape of their honorable image in the eyes of the public.

  17. As one who was raised in Alex form 1963 to 1980, now living in another city far away, I have always tried to read the Town Talk online and keep up w/ Alex. I still come to town occasionaly to see friends and family. I often wonder what it would be like to move back. The town is clearly different from when I left. For one thing, for the 1st 1-5 years when I would return, I would see familiar faces all over town, in traffic, stores, resturants etc. But now when I come to town, I may stay all weekend and never reconize a person. And naturally the infrastructure has changed. But to get back on the subject at hand, I have followed most all elections in Alex, and have always pulled for Ned. I was sad to see him not run again, but it is time for a change, and I thank Ned for his service. I was curious who would run. To me I had not heard of anyone running but for Jaques (knew of hs family name) and had heard of DB thru town talk articles. Well I must say, as I have followed this election, It has become clear that Roy will be elected, and thiat is probably good, as Alex can not stand to re-elect Tillie Snyder. Is DB kin to him? she is truly crazy. Next thing she will be claiming we could grow catfish in the city park pool as economic development! Good luck Alex, all I can say is if you elect DB, I will never have to wonder if I should move back!

  18. This is the most disrespectful campaign ad that I have ever witnessed. It seems Mrs. Brewer has some really deep seated problems and she needs to obtain professional help. How in the world could you compare these two events is beyond me.

  19. Sorry I have been out of town for a week. My friend called yesterday to say she heard a roumor that Jacques had been arrested for raping DB! Is that true? Is that what this ad is about?

  20. Anon 11:33,

I think we all see the connection Delores was trying to make in her commerical. That was blatant. The point is, it’s sick to try to compare her rape with what’s gone on in this campaign, regardless of who’s side you’re on.

  21. Anon 11:33-

What will happen when she’s in a council meeting and experiences opposition to an ordinance or project she supports? Will she say, “you’re opposing me, rape!” DB crossed the line. If she can’t stand the heat of an election, then get out. This is not the line of work for her.

Moreover, could you show where JR has entered into a line of attack on DB’s integrity? What specifically is being said? Perhaps DB should have addressed these so-called attacks point-by-point. At this point, after this ad, it only becomes (and I hate writing this but somebody needs to give me better description) an example of DB’s apparent hysteria.

The credibility and integrity DB had is only being undermined by her own actions.

  22. Slam dunk for Jacques by Delores!! She just handed him the election on a silver platter! Anyone that would agree to use an ad like that obviously doesn’t have what it takes to run a city.

  23. DB is has gone crazy, BBBBBEEEEEEddddddd thats all folks. Db get out of the race you are making this race a joke and embarassing Alexandria. I didn’t know you had to be raped to be mayor. Who ever is running you’re campaign needs their ass kicked.

  24. If I had been a victim of the Garden District rapist, I would be outraged that such a horrifying time in my life is now being used to gain support in an election. She owes all the other victims an apology. How dare she compare what was said about her to such a tragic event! I heard Roy Fletcher was a blood sucker…I just didn’t realize he was going to suck hers. She has stooped to low.

  25. Honest guys, I try very, very hard to keep from disparaging people just because I don’t support them politically. In this case, I can’t help myself. I am too overcome by disgust…

To event hint at the idea that suffering the very typical blows of any political race is in ANY way akin to he absolute dehumanization of rape is so far beyond careless that I don’t even have the right word for it. Anonymous 11:33, if you truly believe that having your reputation challenged in the public arena can actually be likened to the trauma of rape and violation, then you–much like Ms. Brewer–have your priorities all wrong. I am embarrassed for you.

Someone ought to have counseled Ms. Brewer prior to airing this commercial. It is a shameless attempt at manipulation by someone prostituting a very real tragedy and attempting to turn it into political victory.

When one says that they were raped physically, and then they say that their political opponent is “raping” your reputation, they would have to be an absolute idiot to not see why people would think they were likening their opponent to a rapist. Ms. Brewer is a smart lady–she knew what the implication was. That’s what makes this even more disgusting and inhuman.

On behalf of my sisters and my mother, and all women who have truly worked hard and fought to advance their cause in the arena of ideas with honestly and integrity–I say shame on Ms. Brewer. As if women don’t have a hard enough time being taken seriously in professional and political arenas…now this?

This doesn’t even seem like a real commercial. It’s like a perverse Saturday Night Live parody of a commercial.

  26. Thanks Ben Mudhoney!(hehe) I mean Mahoney for the summary. I know Mrs. Brewer and I can’t believe she pulled this. Ever time i think about this, i start feeling weird. Especially the “disrespected our community” part. This is a SERIOUS mistake for Mrs. Brewer. She will NEVER be looked at the same. Not because of the rape, but, because she used the rape as a ladder for her success. I would hope that any intelligent human would see this as a basic form of mental manipulation.

  27. Kuddos to Atownshakedown! You said it perfectly. She has been raped by the ladder of her own success. So sad.

  28. Ya know, the scary thing about this, is the fact that a least one other person in that the DB camp thought that this was a good idea…wow. That should say it all right there. What poor judgment. If DB uses this type of logic/rational in a campaign, I can’t imagine the consequences for Alexandria is she became mayor. This is probably the dumbest strategic mistake i have ever seen.

  29. I wonder what the people of the Garden District are saying about this one. They have been trying so hard to bring back respect to the Garden District Community and she just digs up old wounds.

  30. Jacques go ahead and purchase your inaugural suit. You will be our new mayor. To Mrs. Brewer, it is not too late to get rape counsiling and it is evident you need it. And about your integrity, you are the only person that can destroy your integrity. May I say, job well done.

  31. Yes, the words “issues” and “throwed/thrown (depending upon one’s individual interpretation of slang language)” come to mind after seeing the latest DB ad.

  32. I am a cleco fan, but I really don’t see where roy has done anything or said anything to remotely justify her pity party. It is very horrible about what happened to her, but i have never seen a nonsequitir of this magnitude in La. politics. The pressure of the last few months are too much for her. She needs some professional help and apparently she is a decent person, just not mayor material. A long sabbatical is in order so she can get her wagons back in a circle. I really feel for her, but we need mentally balanced-objective-leadership at the city now! This is really ugly and i hope it quickly recedes into the oblivion of history soon. roy for mayor.

  33. Judgment…it’s about judgment. Hers is obviously bad and we’re luck to have discovered just how bad before we really got in a bad spot. If this ad was DB’s idea, that’s bad judgment. If it wasn’t her idea, and she didn’t shoot it down…well, you know.

  34. What the he–,Girl I know she diden just!!!She is so selfish and thinking only of herself THAT was a low blow. What, she thinks by throwing that out there she’ll get more votes through sympathy. All she did was opened old wounds for other victims. It’s hard enough to deal with it and try to move on,with out it being publicized in a raw manner like that. That’s why we have psychiatric for.Sounds like she needs one.She being a victom herself should of thought twice on it.See That just goes to show ya how much she is NOT for the people.I usually do not vote, but now after all that I am.

  35. Hey! I notice that DB, her guru and gang are back to destroying yard signs, particularly, large, expensive ones as on MacArthur Drive near Popeyes and other, smaller residential type, variously, around town.
She is, again, initiating and playing dirty pool.
