Media Releases on Grayson Capps:
“He’s f***ing awesome!” – Scarlett Johansson, Variety.com

“This is stuff to stake the ‘best bar band’ claim on – slashing slide, crunching electric, a cooking rhythm section and soulful vocals…” – Keith Glass, Rhythms magazine (Australia)

“His rough-hewn testimonial of a voice renders such a well-worn assertion, believable again.” – Keith Spera, Times Picayune

“Like a whiskey-soaked, back alley poet sired by Tom Waits and Robert Johnson, Capps’ stripped-down sound is rooted in the dark side of the Delta.” – Razor Magazine

With a name that could only belong to a musician and a coarse, beer-besotted voice straight out of the backstreets of New Orleans , Grayson Capps evokes the swamp folk-soul made popular by Tony Joe White. He looks the part, too: One glance at his solo debut’s cover conveys its lazy, creaky, homespun sound. Half relaxed blues-rock, half boozy, folksy introspection, Capps’ rustic voice — it sounds more like a relaxed version of Delbert McClinton’s — is front and center, leaving his words and sturdy but near faceless musicians to convey the soulful atmosphere with chipped, faded-paint backing.

Anyone who’s seen the movie A Love Song For Bobby Long — based on a book written by Capps’ father, with its alcoholic haze of good people falling on hard times and looking for redemption — has pretty much heard this album. Capps performed four songs on the soundtrack, but each track from this graphic collection could be its own feature film. Echoes of J.J. Cale, the North Mississippi Allstars, old Ry Cooder, and the great Texas songwriter, Townes Van Zandt permeate these low-key but occasionally spirited blues-rockers. Songs such as “Mercy” and “I Can’t Hear You” come alive thanks to gospel-tinged backing vocals, bringing out the God vs. the Devil undercurrent that rumbles like a latent volcano beneath the album’s surface.

  1. Nope. Grayson Capps is actually a really well-known indie musician, and we’re lucky to get him here.

Don’t knock him until you hear his stuff.

Same thing with Monte last night. He rocked.

“if the music doesnt move you, the get the _ out of the way! ‘Cause evryone else will be!” -Robert Randolph

by the way i hear britney spears has some good stuff for youngins- maybe they should stick to the mall and let the pros handles this one.

  3. Grayson’s tracks on Bobby Long were AWESOME – I almost had him confused with Anders Osborne – guys that’s Anders not Ozzy.

Their music is very similiar both lyrical and in the tone they present.

    Hope I can make it.

  4. i’d first like to thanks all the opinion shapers in town who have begun revitalising the musical culture of alexandria. They are truly working hard to build an all but forgotten scene here that was at one time one of the more important musical stops in the state for acts on tour. Alexandria does have the potential(with the right leadership and attitude) to reclaim it’s rightful seat anlong side baton rouge, new orleans, lafayette, and ruston- for cryin out loud a small hick town like ruston is moving faster culturally than alexandria. so thanks again to the movers and shakers who are developing the alexandria music scene. KEEP ON ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD!!!

Ignorance is always easy to spot, reflected in the 1st post on this blog. Negative, elitist self- centered attitudes such as this one are exactly what has been opressing the culture of our beloved A-town. Have some freakin’ pride in yourself and what your hometown has to offer. If you dont like it, then do yourself and us a f*ckin favor and leave FOR GOOD. As i believe most people would agree, i want to be immersed in a culture founded on an eclectic mix of society and culture that is a far cry from anytown USA.

With the amount of young professionals returning to our city, (all of which who have been cultuaralized in some way) Alexandria’s potential for “coolness” is becomming greater by the day. If we begin to capatalizing on our culutral centers WE CAN SUCEED. This of course will lead to a greater economic impact from local & tourism dollars in turn increasing the talent budgets for all of the local “movers & Shakers”. Thus leading to elimination of “{has beens or unheard of’s}”. in short, the only way to grow our city is to begin supporting it ourselves. after all, no one else can love you until you love yourself.

  5. in regards to anonymous at 226pm, moron….you have to be unheard of until you become heard of and how can you be a has been if you are just getting your music career going….what a ridiculous statement….i would hope that you would buy a ticket to support grayson, but for god sakes, please don’t actually come to the show…..stay home and let mtv, bet, cmt and 93qid tell you what to listen to.
