  1. this debate seems to be going great what of it we have gotton to watch so far…however we are a lil disappointed in the clown talk and kalb for not giving this some publicity.

  2. I agree WST, if it would not have been for the blogs I would not have know about it– thanks for letting us know!

p.s. I like your Oracle– I’ve been to Delphi– still a pretty amazing place. Who knows- I may have absorbed some insight!

  3. Brewer looked tired, unenthusiastic and had no ideas and no excuses. I say she is done. Fuller did better than I expected. But my expectations were so low that the fact that he dressed up exceeded my anticipated disappointment. Red Hammond actually had nouns, vowels and a couple of adverbs in here sentences and of course she had that whole im a vetern thing, Wonder why she didnt mention that little issue of being arrested for shooting someone. ROY was the man. He gave good answers, seemed to connect with the audience and came across as very sincere. Sams was his usual arrogant self. Several of us watching seemed to reach the same conclusion. Sams doesnt expect to win. He is getting what he wants which is…ATTENTION. All the years of being the fat kid in gym class hsa left him with a psychological scar that requires him to incite to get noticed. We noticed, move on . Charles Frederic Smith looked like a deer in the headlights. Had no ideas, gave no vision got someone to watch the bar for him while he walked over to City Hall…Overall, I would say it was the most articulate best performance that Dumb as a Rock Roosevelt Johnson has ever or will ever turn in. Clearly, Roy was winner with Fuller in second. This could become a two MAN race very quickly. Thanks to Bidniss league for putting this on.

  4. I am so excited, it is hard to contain myself. I learned so much from the forum. When are we getting a waterslide? Kick-ass! I suppose we will have to get all our “chinese-american” townspeople to help with the construction. I hope it makes it through the council. My fingers are crossed. Zip-a-dee-doo-da!

  5. Sams clearly won. Believe it. Even the papers is reporting he was the one with details and told it like it is.

You guys can sit in a circle and tell each other whatever you want…read the paper…roy held his own but Sams was dead on when he mentioned drugs.

Plus he gave details and issues.

  6. We can sit in a circle at the waterslide that they build when they tear down Cotton Storage. Or, better yet, a downtown waterslide when city hall is torn down.

  7. “Even the papers IS reporting . . .” Try “are” reporting.

Grammar aside, I do not think the papers picked a candidate. For God’s sake, they even gave some press coverage to Alice Hammond that made her sound somewhat intelligent. If there was a winner though, it was Jacques Roy. He responded to the questions rationally and logically, unlike Sams who wants to nuke City Hall.

  8. There were some wacky moments, as we all expected, but watching the forum was worthwile for me. One thing I appreciated was Joe Fuller bringing up the need to get a healthy mix of uses going downtown. Residential seems to be the element most lacking. Mega recreational elements (i.e, waterslides and sports complexes) will not make most people want to live downtown. The arts and entertainment improvements that have already started to take hold are an enticement. Nice shops and places to meet and eat, plus an old-fashioned beat cop or two would help. Add a marina and downtown Alexandria would work as a condo market for a mix of price ranges.

All agree the Versailles/28 W connection is an important economic element, but let’s also make downtown Alexandria work as a lively urban center. It has been half-baked for too long.

  9. Very good observations, Margaret.
I go downtown often for various functions. I would love to see some realistic improvements.
I only saw the last half of the forum because of lack of publicity, and we have several more to go, which I am looking forward to watching. Does anyone have a list of dates, times and places?

  10. Talk around town this morning is sams was out front in the debate and well informed. He sounds like-just going by what I hear-he won.

  11. Dr. Sams, although intelligent, will not be able to work with the city council. To be an effective mayor, you must be able to deal with reality, which includes working with the city council. The city would not be served well at all by a mayor who has good ideas and good intentions but who is unable to deal with the legislative branch of government for the purpose of implementing his/her ideas. Ideas are merely wasted and remain just ideas if the person with the ideas has no way to turn the ideas into a reality.

Alexandria needs a mayor who is not only smart but also capable of making things happen. The only candidate I have seen thus far who meets these qualifications is Jacques Roy.

  12. Qualified How? By being an attorney for 9 or 10 years? Because his dad is well known? Although Roy is enthusiastic, well spoken, and intelligent, he is as qualified as Alice Hammond until I hear or see something better from him.

  13. Jacques is not a career politician. But like you said, he is intelligent, well spoken and enthusiastic — attributes which will make him a great mayor. Jacques is also someone who is not afraid to ask for help from capable people, unlike John Sams who knows everything. I would much rather have someone as my mayor who does not claim to everything but is humble enough to ask the right people the right questions.

I think in the days and weeks ahead we will see Jacques Roy getting his bearings and taking the lead in the mayor’s race.

  14. Did you notice how Sams threw down his paper and leaned back in a smug way after every comment. Is that really what you want in a Mayor. I am sure the heads of big companies will look forward to working with him.

  15. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE ASSHOLE, PEOPLE! John Sams thinks he is omnipotent and a political Jesus Christ. He needs to be stopped before he does to this city what he’s done to the School Board.

  16. Done to the school board? are you nuts? we are much better off after 8 years of Dr. Sams on the board. And if you think Mr. Rogers, AKA Roy is ready to take on myron lawson and his ilk, you need to change medication.

  17. How has he helped the school board?? He has made the other members completely ineffective. They are all too afraid to say anything for fear of being attacked by Dr. Sams.
