Proof We’re On The Right Track: Clear Channel Out Of Louisiana!

I haven’t been able to readily confirm this, but it’s an “old” story that I somehow let slip through the cracks.

Clear Channel Exits Louisiana Market For $4 Million

In a deal filed with the FCC today, Clear Channel has agreed to sell Sports KDBS-AM, AC KKST-FM, Country KRRV-FM & Classic Rock KZMZ-FM/Alexandria, LA to Cenla Broadcasting Co. — a locally based company that already owns News/Talk KSYL and CHR/Pop KQID in the market.

The transaction makes Cenla the dominant company in Alexandria, market No. 221. Opus Media Partners and Citadel each enjoy three-station clusters, while Cajun, Flinn, FM Broadcasting, Radio Group, URBan Radio, NWLA and Rose Ann Marx each have stand-alone operations in the market.

Clear Channel gained control of the four stations in Alexandria following its merger with AMFM, which had acquired the stations via its 1999 merger with Capstar.

Cenla has already made a $200,000 escrow deposit. It is not known when closing is expected.

  1. Seriously doubt this will improve the quality of the stations in the market. That’s why I have a satellite radio. The stations here suck.

  2. But it’s a step in the right direction.

And it’ll (hopefully) allow these stations to play more local talent and independent label music.

  3. They’ll still play Lynyrd Skynyrd five times every five hours and rehash the same songs on an endless loop.

We just need to pick up KLSU and everything will be allright.

  4. apparantly mr ward-steinman was a radio commentator back in the day. his daughter wrote a short note about this on alexandria-retrospective website. click here and scroll down to the Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at 22:34:50 (GMT) entry.

  5. His daughter OWNED KRRV & what is now known as ESPN radio – originally KDBS. Judy Ward Steinman – was also married to a former mayor. She sold KRRV and KDBS to Champion Broadcasting. Champion also purchased KCKR 98 (now Star 98.7) from Bob Holiday and KZMZ. Champion then sold to Gulf Star which sold to Clear Channel.

  6. I don’t think 98.7 is STAR 98.7 anymore. Have you listened to it in the last week. I am not sure WHAT it is !!!

  7. As a former employee with Clear Channel Radio, I strongly disagree. I cannot imagine what the company has done to turn you away, other than take some of the favorite radio stations in the area and make them even better. With the resources from Clear Channel Inc. we were able to do more things to help the community than any other stations in the area. For example, our employees, of which were all local, stood on our LOCAL streets and collected money for Katrina victims. As well as raising thousands of dollars for St. Jude’s. Not to mention the LOCAL events throughout the year (Uncle Sam Jam, Bayou Bull, Mud Races, etc.) that help to bring people into our community, which benefits everyone. Now, don’t get me wrong Cenla Broadcasting has done a great job in the area as well, no wonder they were able to buy some of the top stations. But, during Clear Channel’s time here, they did nothing but help build our stations and our community. Who says they weren’t local!

  8. 98.7 sucks now. It’s hip hop crap! The only people who listen to that shit aren’t buyers of anything useful, except drugs.
