Godard: Video Blog with Mayoral Candidate Delores Brewer

Mrs. Brewer answers questions concerning the Alexandria Housing Authority, the need to clean house downtown, Charles Fredrick Smith’s opposition in the race, and the televised dispute she had with Bridgett Brown.

A Transcript of the Exchange Concerning Bridgett Brown.

MG: Explain to us your seemingly non-truth (didn’t say lie) regarding the meeting with the lawyers from Baton Rouge. Or why did the mayor leave you hanging on a clarification matter?

DB: Well you know, that happened a few weeks ago, and I think that maybe it was just a figure of speech. The mayor went down. He wanted to go talk to his lawyers. He has every right to talk to them. I was with him. We had a great meeting. Good information was gathered that he didn’t know before. So you know, it’s just a figure of speech. I don’t know what people think as far as the mayor a day or two later saying that there was a meeting. There was a meeting.

MG: So there was a pre-planned meeting?

DB: Absolutely.

MG: But when you answered at the Council meeting it sounded like it was just happenstance. You happened to be there. It was characterized like that.

DB: I understand that, and you know, maybe I misspoke. I think that it was a figure of speech, and I probably should have clarified that more. But the bottom line is that we did have a meeting and good information came from the meeting.

Mrs. Brewer also says we need to investigate the AHA, and in answering a question concerning whether or not she would hire Bridgett Brown, she states that if she were elected mayor, anyone who is not doing their job would be fired immediately.

The blogs have been down on Mrs. Brewer recently; many people (most of whom probably work for the other candidates) have even suggested that she’ll be dropping out of the race. It’s so transparent it’s not even funny. Others have written about her son getting into an altercation one night downtown, implying that Mrs. Brewer used her political connections to hide this story. Let me answer that personally: I was there the night of that incident. I even spoke with the girl in question. (She was very bizarre and confrontational). I can guarantee that Mrs. Brewer’s son was the victim of this girl’s sociopathic behavior. She was the instigator. End of story.

(And I completely expect to be maligned by the very people who published these lies. But that’s okay. I’m not the story here).

I understand that this type of rumor-mongering is a part of every political campaign, but considering this is our most important election in twenty years, I hope that we’ll stop allowing the discussion to be dictated by people who persistently publish anonymous, off-topic lies. Yes, they may be scandalous and interesting, but guess what? They’re lies, and they shouldn’t matter.

And no, I haven’t decided who I’m going to vote for. Honestly. I don’t know. I’m waiting for the debates.

She deliberately lied about the BR meeting. You can overlook it, you can excuse it, you can skip it but you can not, in all honesty deny it. That she would label her deliberate falsehood a “figure of speech” is another lie AND an insult.

  2. Barbara Avatar

Brewer just as easily could have asked B. Brown how it could be possible that she didn’t know about the meeting.

Kelvin Sanders and Myron Lawson had already been previously informed, and it’s open knowledge that Brown is a close business partner and friend of both of them. Considering the City Attorney was informed and that the City Attorney is close friends with the CLECO lawyer, Brown, it seems obvious that Brewer probably assumed that Brown previously knew about this meeting.

Brown, IMHO, used the Council meeting, with all of the television and print press at her disposal, to air out her frustrations at not being included on internal discussions. As much as people seem to despise Brown, if we’re paying her to work the Cleco case, we should still let her work. Otherwise, we’d just be giving her free money.

  3. Anonymous Avatar

point well take, however, that has absolutely no bearing on the issue of Brewer’s veracity. That Bridget may be worse is certainly no defense to the lie.

Let’s get to brass tacks. Everybody runnng has skeletons and mishaps. The real issue is who is REALLY qualified to be mayor AND has no prior criminal records. Also, I do not think a janitor is qualified to be mayor. And louis is a felon! A cameraman doesn’t exactly spell Qualified….nice…but no mayor. I want this city to prosper…..and that takes leadership, respect, dignity, and EXPERIENCE. Being on the city council does not constitute goverment leader status. I am scared that the ignorance this city has let run this local government will take us down completely.

  5. Anonymous Avatar

Dear Mg, why don’t you also video blog the rest of the candidates. I would love to hear LM explain his leadership qualities all while being a felon???? INTERESTING! This is typical of the media to skew the best news and turn and twist into bulls”%&%! I personally think it is only fair and democratic to videoblog ALL candidates! I AM WATCHING!!

  6. Anonymous Avatar

LM, I assume you mean Louis Marshall,is NOT running for anything. All the seats are NOT up for re-election this year.

It would be nice to hear from the OPEN council seats once official announcements have been made.

I think Delores did a fairly strong interview, especially given that she has not done a lot of public speaking in the past. KALB has a bad habit of placing people at a 3/4 angle when filming them- hard to look at the interviewer or the camera.

What would YOU say about the BB fight? We all make mistakes– the IMPORTANT THING is that we LEARN from those mistakes and move forward.

Delores is an intelligent woman- my bet is that she has definitely learned!

Aw shucks I’m blushing, and if you have met my husband you know the opposite is true as well.
O.k. here’s the deal, we will interview everyone we can get our hands on. The only qualification is you must have had an official anouncement. I am working on other races but as we got this project up and running the most important “local” race was the Mayor.
Suggestions on who should be next?

  11. Anonymous Avatar

    Council at Large contenders perhaps.

After seeing the video blog on Sams and Brewer, I realize that Brewer is not perfect. The Bridgett Brown affair was certainly a mis-step, but Delores Brewer is the most qualified candidate for the job.

Spilling semen on Monica’s blue dress was a miss-step. This was a “figure of speeeeech”.

Michele I’ve been smitten with you since first you graced the network. Never met your hubby, except for what I’ve read on this or another blog…;-) I’ll certainly take your word for it. Is he in the business?

MG….you need to shed some light on ALL MAYORAL candidates via videoblog. It seems that none of the other candidates get any sh*#. Why is that?

  17. Anonymous Avatar

This whole case about cleco is screwing up the whole focus of the mayoral race. BB is a flat out racist and has one agenda….wanaa guess? Why can’t we get to the core issues here? What are the candidates goals, office mission, planned staffing, QUALIFICATIONS, past record, EXPERIENCE….let us get back to the issue PLEASE!

CFS and Roosevelt may be ignorant, but they have already proven that they can win an election. Roosevelt won an at large election, so he could possibly draw enough votes to be your next mayor.

How are people just now noticing how ignorant they are??

I am not as worried about their intellegence as I am the intellegence of their staff. Many, many city jobs are appointed. Who are their friends/supporters looking for work??

  22. Anonymous Avatar

I have always noticed their ignorance. How can you not be concerned with their ignorance? They are completely incompetent! This administration cannot be a place for some moron with no experience!!!!!

  30. Anonymous Avatar

    Michele,

I am certain that you realize the significance of this Mayoral Election. We have some candidates who quite frankly don’t have the intelligence and experience that are required to prepare someone for running our City for the next four years. It is frustrating to me that many folks could really care less. As a City employee I have a unique view of how are City works. And right now, it is sooooo disfunctional. Whose fault is that? At this point it doesn’t matter. Your task, should you chose to accept it is: to provide the electorate with factual information that will assit them in deciding who they should vote for, communicating the significance of this election, and encouraging everyone to vote.

  31. Anonymous Avatar

I am the other anonymous who wants the sign in the yard. I WILL SUPPORT AND VOTE FOR DELORES, AND THIS WAS NOT AN ATTEMPT AT HUMOR. Henceforth, I will have to take on a persona here, not to remain anonymous forever.

  32. Michele G. Avatar

To anon, who spelled my name right (rarely happens) I accept the task:
“to provide the electorate with factual information that will assist them in deciding who they should vote for, communicating the significance of this election, and encouraging everyone to vote”
    hence the Video Blog.
Now to the real problem, what more can we do? We are developing plans for a debate but thoughts on where we go from here are always welcome.

  33. Anonymous Avatar

I am telling you sams is making the most sense and is better than I ever expected. He seems to be solid.

  34. switching to sams Avatar

I talk to a lot of folks that dislike Sams but most say that they support him. They think that he has the characteristics that are needed now and they want a change. Crap like the mystery contract by CFS that floated unnoticed thru Lawson’s finance committee make people crazy with anger.

  35. we saw that... Avatar

    who is Sarah Atchison-Brame?

  36. Anonymous Avatar

I TOLD YOU THAT CFS WAS A NO GOOD CRIMINAL PIECE OF SH^&!!!!
THAT IS WHAT WE WILL GET IF PEOPLE VOTE FOR HIS SORRY ASS!

  37. Anonymous Avatar

Sarah Brame is Mike Brame’s ex-wife. How in the hell did the council not know about this contract? Is this her company and why is her exact line of business> Sounds like bullsh&^ to me. Smells bad. Let me see, CFS agreed to pay her $28/hr to “help the homeless situation”. What the hell! What are her qualifications! She sells cellular phones for god sake!
YOU SEE NOW WHY WE NEED SOMEONE WITH QUALIFICATIONS, AND ETHICS?

  38. Anonymous Avatar

If I am not mistaken Sarah Brame asisted Lamar in applying for some grants to fund the Golf Course Proposal. She may be perfectly qualified to “assist with homeless situation”. However, it does seem a little odd that they tried to slip this in under the radar. That will always attract suspiscion even if everything is perfectly legit. Maybe CFS is going to get her to help get the homeless registered to vote.

  39. Lamar White, Jr. Avatar

I’m not too familiar with the specifics of this proposal, but I know Sarah well. She’s done some consultation work, pro bono, for Bringhurst Golf Course and has been one of our greatest proponents. Her work is the reason the United States Golf Association is very interested in Bringhurst.

She also did a lot of pro bono work for the Weed and Seed program and has worked on a number of charitable projects throughout our community.

I don’t think Sarah (or who she was or was not married to) is the story here, because from what I understand, the idea is sound. Sarah has a plan for identifying and solving homelessness in Alexandria, modeled, in part, after Mayor Bloomberg’s plan in New York City.

I also know, for a fact, that Sarah had assumed that she would be presenting her proposal to the Council in a public meeting. She was under the impression that this would occur after the fact sheet had been introduced, and considering past protocol, I think she was misled into believing that this was the way things were typically handled.

But I still think this story needed to come out, and it would be ashame if it led to people anonymous attacking and blaming Sarah… because I know she had the right intentions; she was just getting the wrong advice.

Remember: Ultimately, our elected officials determine the way they do business. When concerned citizens step forward with a plan for solving a problem, they are at the mercy of the Council to determine the best way to present this plan.

  40. Anonymous Avatar

Ms. Brame needs some career counseling. Apparently caring for the homeless pays about a fourth of what you get for studying water parks. And only $200 in expenses. Is she trying to ruin it for the rest of us consultants??

  41. Anonymous Avatar

Seems strange “proposals” keep getting presented to the City in manners skirting procurement law. I am sure that it has been determined that this proposal, as was the Golf Course proposal, did not need to follow legally mandated procedures. In fact the procedures being followed on this and the golf course proposal (seems ironic same folks are involved) have been held up pending any qualified, interest person applying.

One could come to the conclusion that the concept of the Brames and the White’s, being of superior something, know what is best for the community and any matter in which they are involved in with the City need not follow the law.

It might be interesting to note that in order for folks to determine if they are qualified to be a consultant or run a golf course the need must be defined and publically announced in order to, as CFS said, give everybody a chance.

Now I realize that, due to my past postings on procurement procedures, I have been cussed, discussed, belittled and adjudged to being completly ignorant and erroneous relative to procurement. I also realize that neither the homeless consultant or golf course consutant
    agreements have been entered into.

Still waiting for the Council to vote on the fifth, I remain:

    Sincerely

One thing no one mentions is that Sams will clean things up at city hall in terms of chronyism.

  43. Anonymous Avatar

You can bet that Sams won’t be taking care of his friends because HE HAS NO FRIENDS. That’s good.

  44. Lamar White, Jr. Avatar

I respect your passion concerning procurement law and proper procedures, and I assure you that it was never our intention to supercede any established protocol or to imply any hint of collusion or cronyism.

With regard to Bringhurt Golf Course, I have been advised that the City has followed proper procedure; a two week long request for proposal was issued by Delores Brewer.

At the conclusion of those two weeks, we met with the City of Alexandria concerning a lease agreement on clubhouse operations, and we still remain the only proposal for renovating and managing the course’s facilities. We are in the process of working with the City in order to structure a fair and equitable lease agreement. This arrangement may take a few weeks, as it involves several components.

I am not personal friends or family members with anyone in City Government, with the exception of my distant cousin, Jodie White, and in pursuing Bringhurst, I relied on published e-mail addresses and contact phone numbers to express my proposal, a route that is available to any private citizen.

Part of this is that our collective distrust of government is so heightened that we doubt the intentions and motivations of private citizens who simply want to do something creative and productive for our community.

By the way, we are not entering into a “consultant” agreement (I’m not sure what made you arrive at that imprecise and misleading conclusion), and we are not asking for any type of monetary compensation from the City. We have requested that the City invest in the course’s improvements, including security and lighting, as a matter of civic responsibility.

Ms. Brame can speak for herself, but as I previously stated, I do not have access to the entire proposal. What I know about it thus far, based on my conversations with her, leads me to believe that it’s a worthy cause.

You may feel like you are being belittled and maligned, and perhaps you have the right intentions. But considering the publicity our Bringhurst proposal garnered in the media, it seems disingenuous to imply that the public wasn’t made aware that this project was “available.” I suggest you read the previous coverage in the Town Talk, particularly the article written by Billy Gunn. He writes about the request for proposal.

In short, you are right to be frustrated if you feel the government’s modus operandi is questionable, but when you direct your frustrations onto private citizens who want to work on worthy projects for the betterment of the community, blaming them for the way the government handled their proposals, you completely miss the point.

I am not in government. I have never worked with government before. We have a good idea, the right motivation, and the ability to see this through, and we expressed our desire to our elected leaders.

By the way, you can sign your name. It will give your opinions more gravitas.

Everyone seems so concerned about who should be the mayor. You need to worry about who the mayor will appoint to run his/her administration. The mayor appoints about 25 or so people.

For years Ned has been a nice figure head, with Harold making shaddy deals behind the scene. (and getting caught). The mayor could save face and pass the blame. All departments seem to be set up this way.

We need to know who each candidate is planning on appointing/retaining. It would also be nice to know how the new mayor manages his staff.

I cannot see Sams having a good working relationship with anyone.

Roosevelt would be a puppet for someone (it would be nice to know who)

CFS would be involved in all types of shady deals, things a staff would have to hide.

Delores would be more of what we have now.

I think I will vote for Delores, at least it won’t be worse than it is now. That seems to be all we can hope for.

  46. Anonymous Avatar

Perhaps there will be other choices and you won’t have to “settle”.

any other “new” candidate at this point would just be a spoiler. jacque is a great guy and i would be proud to have him as my mayor. he obviously did not want to be mayor or his hat would have been in the ring way before this. if he wants to be mayor, he should wait four years and run. let me give you a scenario totally of my own conjecture. the regime annointed delores as heir apparent. the list of supporters on her first fund raiser was identical to ned’s fundraiser last time he ran. for whatever reasons, dolores can’t get any traction, and the regime knows she is dead in the water. they underestimated the sentiment for change, any change. with delores riding a dead horse, they have to do something. their worse nightmare is sams. so what do you do? you play roy for a dupe at the 11th hour. you know he can’t win this late, but you hope he peels enough voters off of sams and delores to put all three out of the race, and have a run off between two of the black candidates. you then cut a deal with one of those candidates for the run off, and the regime stays in power. poor roy for the rest of his life will be remembered as electing one of the black candidates, not that the color matters, but the quality of the two. i think roy had better think twice, three times and four times before he runs. he may be being played for the fool. again, if his desire is to be mayor, and i think he would make a great mayor, he needs to wait four years. to merely split the white vote this election will ruin any political plans he may have.

Brewer is toast. When Jacque announces early next week her campaign loses whatever steam it had. NO LIE, even her most vocal supporters have been whispering how weak her candidacy has been thus far……sure she might ride it to end…but WHO wants to give her more money now?? The rumor on some of the other blogs is that Rick Ranson will be Brewer’s chief of staff. Any truth to it?

Rick did a great job on the council and he’d be a great asset. He doesn’t take any cr_p off anyone. The other councilmen respect (fear?) him. It would make for an interesting relationship between the Brewer administration and the council.
