  1. This is exactly the kind of thing we need here. Unfortunately it’s illegal in most cities. Our current zoning laws mandate that land uses be seperated from each other. This neo-traditional development concept uses older cities as a model for new development. Instead of segregating land uses so that you have to use your car to get anywhere these developments allow mixed use such as you would find in older cities like New York, Boston, and New Orleans. Perhaps some forward thinking developer will try it here someday.

  2. As I understand it, a zoning law exists so that you wouldn’t have a beer joint next to a school or church, etc. Why would anyone want a commune of hippies in a quiet suburban neighborhood? I venture to say if you spend a couple of hundred thousand dollars for a single family home you would only want like-minded family dwellings around you. I think the nuns should get a variance but that wouldn’t address the future situations I’m afraid.

  3. Actually “Wonderin” the zoning laws do not control the types of people who can live in a certain location. They only specify the uses, size of building, number of people residing there etc. So, if a bunch of hippies wanted to move next door to you and paint the house pink then you would be stuck with them. This assumes that they are all related. That is the only reason the Nuns are having to apply for a variance. If they were related it would be a non issue.

  4. Interesting thing is that the Nuns are part of the church family. I wonder what a really sharp lawyer could do with that?

  5. Right you are Civil, they’re all married to Jesus, so they’re all family.

I used a poor example with the hippies earlier; when I meant to imply “use” rather than inhabitants.

  6. My apologies Lamar, I didn’t mean to highjack this thread. Should have commented on the Wolf one.

Is Alexandria ready for a River Ranch?

  7. How could Alexandria be ready for a River Ranch???

No one wants nuns on their street. How about MIXED use zoning? Does that mean a little coffee shop could be next door? or a daycare or a BAR?

    No, Alexandria is NOT ready.

  8. People like YOU keep Alexandria from being “ready”.

Chill out and be a little more supportive. It’s eventually gonna happen whether you want it to or not.

    Plus, I dig the nuns.

  9. Alexandria won’t be ready for anything until we stop letting people over 60 stop the progress of our city with their 1950 mentality. You cannot continue to work and do business in the same manner you were doing it 40 years ago, 30 years ago, 20 years ago much less 2 years ago. People have got to continue to change and adapt or else they are dead intellectually. This doesn’t mean the old ideas don’t work, it means we have to look at them and see how to apply what worked then in today’s situations.

This city needs new life in its leadership from every aspect – not just political.

  10. The Eskimos put their elderly on an ice flow and let them float out to sea and perish. Perhaps this approach would interest you but be forewarned that your allowance would stop almost immediately.

  11. I take exception to the remark about those over 60. I do not have a 1950’s attitude. I really want a 1960’s attitude but I don’t remeber the 60’s so I am actually lost. All I remember is double knits (green and yellow). I can barely remember the Country & Western Club located where England Drive hits McArthur. Wish I could remember the name. Suffering from CRS I guess. What were we talking about? I remember when the youths respected the Elders. No on second thought we didn’t actually respect them we put up with them while thinking they were full of shit.

I remember the Borden’s Ice Cream Parlor. I remember “drinking wine fodie odie drinking wine”

Good memories of back then if I could just remember.

  12. I forgot I remember Skippy’s and the Schlitz on draught and Fay and what’s her name. What was her name?

  13. I remember the Nam and coming home. Don’t remember much between leaving and coming home. In fact when I came home Fay and what’s her name were still running Skippy’s.

  14. Anon – my comment was to those people over 60 who are in control and want us to stay just like we are and have been for the past 50 years! It doesn’t sound like you do. It sounds like you have fond memories of places to go, people you were able to sit and visit with, people you developed a great relationship with – where can that happen now?

Trust me – I do know there are some progressive people over 60 – they just don’t speak up and aren’t in the position to help change things YET.

  15. I am over 60, have a business, and have 13 loyal employees who depend on me to make rational progressive decisions. Despite this, I look in the mirror and see a gray haired over-weight fellow and always question my own relevance. I know I don’t have all the answers but I do have some of them and they seem to work. I could never imagine being 60 and having grandchildren and arthritis but it happened and I really enjoy it. Just think about what you are saying to and about people and remember that the alternative to living to 60+ is not very attractive. No harm done, just think a little before you hurt.

  16. I wish I had gray hair. Mine is clear colored. I wish I remembered when I had hair. What is the title of that song “Lost in the 50’s tonight”? Getting ancient – over 60 – is hell. Things that supposed to get stiff don’t; things that ain’t supposed to get stiff do. I remember Disco but not real well.

It is hell being over 60. We become so useless. Actually just parasites on society. Don’t hardly have enough energy left to clear my pants when I pee.

  17. There are a couple contributers on here who want to hurt people. They have an unfortunate and very special kind of problem. It will ultimately be our task as doctors and lawyers and ministers to protect these people from hurt. Kinda funny if you think about it.

  18. What about the Knox Inn? Best enchiladas ever at midnight. Any of ya’ll remember Fuzzy’s? How about the Reed & Bell? The Happy Hollow before it got ruined? Disco caused the generation X crowd IMHO.

It’s our job as old farts to try and teach the youngsters. It’s the youngsters job to take those lessons and build on them for their children. See the pattern?

Does anybody know if Finnigans Wake plays any Floggin Molly?

  19. Yes, Finnegan’s plays some Flogging Molly every once in a while and they also have the Flogging Molly logo framed in the back by the pool table.
