Two Letters in Today’s Paper Highlight Racism

This one addresses a white Marksville woman who was being harassed because her husband, who is currently serving in Iraq, is black.

And this one is about how police officers (in Oakdale, I presume) handcuffed a black city councilman over an unpaid speeding ticket!

  1. Having worked in Oakdale for a little bit, otherwise known as three months in Hell, I found a lot of racism out in the open. Comments, segregation, and such were made in the public and the tensions were high at times when there was no need. It’s very believable that this occurred. On the other hand, racism there goes both ways.

Racism in Alexandria is still plain as day. Try dating someone of another race and walk through the Alexandria Zoo. I spent a quiet afternoon with an ex of mine browsing through the place. People stared, guffawed, and stepped out of our way or moved their children away when we were feeding the koi.

Back when my dad got stationed here in the 1980s, mixed race couples could request for another assignment because they could never find housing off base and there were real threats. Happened more than people like to acknowledge.
