A source tells me that during last night’s corporate spelling bee, the two teams from the Town Talk were the first two eliminated. Funny. I kid. I kid.

And another reputable source tells me that the recent resignations from Louisiana College represent approximately 370-plus years of academic experience.

  1. Your source is inaccurate, just like the newspaper’s own favorable account of what happened there.

Rapides General was the first team eliminated in the second round following a controversial dispute. The bee’s organizers huddled near the judge’s table and complained about them tossing Rapides when it was the judge’s own fault! They spelled evenness right the first time, but the judge said for them to spell it again. When they spelled it a different way the second time, the judge eliminated them. Rapides was robbed.

The organizers huddled near the table also complained to the judges that Cabrini reneged on paying for its team, which later placed! Go figure, a multimillion dollar Christian-based corporate giant tells a struggling nonprofit it cannot afford a team. Cabrini’s CEO reportedly demanded the bee organizers allow the hospital’s team to enter so he can save face in the medical community. The CEO cannot afford a few hundred dollars to benefit what his hospital employees so desperately need: literacy!!!!!!!!!

The Town Talk’s news team was tossed out when they couldn’t spell blanch. As they walked out, they were overheard telling a door greeter that they never heard of the word. It’s a cooking term, something they should know from their own food section if they ever read their own newspaper! Oh wait, they don’t read, spell or write … something you can tell by picking up the Town Talk.

What’s sad is, the woman on the paper’s team immediately left after the judge told her she spelled it wrong. Her leaving disrupted the event. Then her teammates made it worse with the commotion they caused by walking out! Just like the radio station’s team! Both teams were so unprofessional and just bad, bad losers. The other losing teams stuck it out until the end.

The Town Talk’s accounting team lasted to the seventh round. But they were the bigger ones and stayed to the end. Did you see that in the paper? No. The reporter wouldn’t even say how the news room got embarrassed by a bunch of accountants from their own company. It would be interesting to know if the newspaper even paid for its teams or if they strong-armed placement just like Cabrini did.

So, in all of this, where was the Town Talk’s competition? Nowhere. KALB, Cenla Focus and Northside Journal didn’t turn out to support literacy, but does this really surprise anyone? No. It just stands as testament to the status quo.

  2. That’s hilarious. Who knew a charity spelling bee would be so dramatic? Thanks for clearing up the facts.

However, I don’t think it’s fair to attack KALB, Cenla Focus, and the Northside Journal for not supporting literacy. I’m sure they support literacy. Consider that Cenla Focus and the Northside Journal are considerably smaller outfits than the Town Talk.

Anyway, funny stuff. Thanks for your contribution.

  3. I’ve always hated the Town Talk’s numerous spelling errors, but a few weeks ago, we visited my wife’s grandmother in Baton Rouge and I picked up the Advocate and started to read the front page. It said that Gov. Blanco’s support of something was beginning to “waiver.” I was like, “WTF? This is the front fucking page!” I guess this is a problem with the news community in general.
