One of the problems is the boom market for decent welders. With the high oil prices and the rebuilding after the storms, hourly wages are sky high. Not many are willing to give up$25 an hour to work for $15 to start. The younger folks feel that they don’t have to work with their hands and will tell you so PDQ. So very few are interested in becoming a welder/pipefitter/carpenter/electrician or any of the trades. When did being a craftsman become something to be ashamed of?

Civil, it became shameful when our government pays so many people not to work. Far too many young people don’t believe work is the way to go these days. Lack of responsibility is big among the younger set these days. I’m NOT including ALL young folks but many.

Part of the problem–a BIG part- it that the Louisiana Technical College system wants to take up to 2 years to train a welder when ship yards can do it in 6 months. Until that system is overhauled to meet the real world’s training needs we’ll always have a shortage of trained workers.
