Recently on the Antics blog, there has been a lot of chatter about race in Alexandria from people who probably don’t live in Alexandria. It is not my intention to fan the flames of any racist, but rather, to present readers with a glimpse into the voices that make up Central Louisiana. Let’s get this out in the open so you know the kind of people we are dealing with.

Racial politics is a huge topic of discussion here in Alexandria, and both sides are to blame for this. Many white people refuse to acknowledge ANY black government official as legitimate, even though Alexandria is majority African-American. And many black people in Alexandria exacerbate racial tensions by invoking “race” as the answer to every social dilemma.

Anthropologists believe that every single member of a “racist society” is somehow socialized into being racist. There are varying degrees of racism, they say, but racism is a deeply ingrained (though socially constructed) characteristic of everyone in a “racist society.” I think of this concept whenever I hear people who say, “Now, I’m not trying to be a racist, but….” The underlying message here is “It doesn’t matter if you’re not trying to be a racist; your culture has made you one, and you speak for your culture.”

Ultimately, a debate on race like the one in Cenla Antics is futile. It doesn’t promise to solve any great problem, and it only shows the worst of us: the petty, the power-hungry, the jealous, and the ignorant. Perhaps, though, if we put this out in the open, and we tell people that this is not how to get their message across, then we can start building toward an understanding. Here are some of the more egregious comments made on Cenla Antics. These remarks are already in the public domain. I also want readers to understand that I do not support any of the comments below. To me, if you strip these comments of their hyperbole, you simply have the sad expressions of people jealous and hungry for control. By the way, I think there is room for a discussion on the direction of the black community, and many black leaders (Bill Cosby’s recent remarks come to mind) have spoken out. But this discussion should not be conflated with local politics, because they are not the same issue.

Alexandrians, you really shouldn’t be talking like this in public. You’re making us all of look like fools:

Coutee is the “House Nigger” for the black political leaders of Alexandria. The “Preachers”, the majority of the City Council, and the “Cibil Rights Leaders (I is the head of the local chapter of the NAACP eben if I is headen to Angola) and the areas largest bigoted white hater the Right Reverend from Woodsworth were never going to be happy until Cicardo was gone.

Thinnest book in the world: “Blacks I have met while jogging” (This is intended to be a spin off of racist joke)

We need to force the parades into the quarters so the Constituents don’t have to go as far for all the free goodies and the location will reduce the number of Whitey’s participating.

Carolyn you need to understand that if your of caucasian ethnicity you are (in their eyes) a racist. Though you have never owned slaves, mistreated Afro-Americans, denied them their just due and rights you are racists. How else can the African Americans shuck personal responsibiloity for their actions. They must blame someone so they blame Whitey for everything from ingrown toenails to lunar eclipses.

Being equal and helping their bretheren are the furtherest things from the minds of Myron, Smith, Hobbs, Sanders, Bridgette, etc. Their mantra is “Now it is my time.”

In case you havn’t notice the Italian Comunity is not running the City the African community is.

    Seems as though Cenla Antics is drawing response and your blog isn’t.

    If you are going to respond to the material of others at least be professional enough to respond on that blog site. Stop stealing from others.

    Dude, have you been reading my site?

    Copying material from other sites is a crucial part of any properly operated blog. I don’t know what you’d prefer, and I don’t really know why you’re so offended that I’ve been copying material.

    I always reference outside material, and I am careful to let readers know when they’re reading my words and when they’re reading someone elses.

    And no, the site is not doing poorly at all, though I bet you wish it were.

    For your edification:
    Cerebral palsy or CP is the most common childhood physical disability. It is a permanent physical condition that affects movement. A new international consensus definition has been proposed: “Cerebral palsy (CP) describes a group of disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. The motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, cognition, communication, perception, and/or behavior, and/or by a seizure disorder” (Rosenbaum et al, 2005)”. The incidence in developed countries is approximately 2-2.5 per 1000 live births. Incidence has not declined over the last 60 years despite medical advances like electro-fetal monitoring. Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disorder, however secondary orthopaedic deformities are common for example, hip dislocation and scoliosis of the spine. There is no known cure; medical intervention, Conductive Education (w) has been shown to be helpful. These treatments nowadays focus on developing the person’s participation in everyday life, and not ‘fixing’ their impairments. While severity varies widely, cerebral palsy ranks among the most costly congenital conditions to manage.

    Cerebral palsy is an “umbrella term” in that it refers to a group of different conditions. It has been suggested that no two people with CP are alike even if they have the same diagnosis. Cerebral palsy is divided into three major classifications to describe the different movement impairments. These classifications reflect the area of brain damaged. The three classifications are: (1) Spastic; (2) Dyskinetic; and (3) Ataxic. Cerebral palsy is further classified by topography, dependent on the region of the body affected. These typography classifications include: (1) hemiplegia; (2) diplegia; (3) quadriplegia.

    Cerebral palsy can occur during pregancy (~75%), at birth (~5%) or after birth (~15%). 80% of causes are unknown. For the small number where cause is known this can include infections, lack of iodine and significant head injury in very early childhood.

    No, my disability is not a mental one, though some people afflicted with CP have mental difficulties. My motor skills problems are not accompanied by any “disturbances of sensation, cognition, communication, perception, and/or behavior.” Indeed, it is important to remember that CP is an umbrella term, because my particular disability is VERY different than 99% of people diagnosed with CP.

    Try not to mess with someone for being disabled. It’s not nice.

  5. Actually I had a cousin with CP. Rudy had a wonderful personality and ccepted the lot he was served up and overcame. He was not bitter as you seem to be. He, as most of us, done the best he could with what he was furnished and was proud of his accomplishments.

    You on the other hand seem to be trying to show up others with your “superior intelligence” thus making up for your disability.

    Relax fellow the world doesn’t hate you. It is just your arrogant, psuedo(sic)-intelligent mantra we dislike.

    CP does not define me, and I hope that it does not define the way people perceive me. I am sure that Rudy was a good person, and I am also sure that he was afflicted with a very different type of CP.

    If you dislike my “arrogant, psuedo-intelligent” mantra, then converse with me on a SUBSTANTIVE level. Tell me why you disagree.

    So far, you only seem interested in breaking me down, insulting me, and comparing me to your COUSIN (WHAT????).

    I’m not trying to show people up with my “superior intelligence, thus making up for (my) disability.” That is a strangely constructed argument. I am who I am.

    Would you be saying the same thing to me if I were not “disabled?”

    Fine. I am not disabled. Meet me in real life. It’s a label that has followed me for my entire life, but it’s not exactly apt. I originally brought it up because I wanted people to know who I was, but I don’t think of myself as disabled… because when I meet people like your cousin, I am reminded how fortunate I am.

    One more thing, I don’t think the world hates me, but I think that the Internet allows people to write things they’d never say in real life (especially since they could not hide under the covers of anonymity). I think many people have taken advantage of this, and instead of ignoring them, I have addressed them head-on.

  19. I can not believe people would attack you about your disability. What cowards! Sounds like they are a little jealous of you. They wish they had half the brains that you have. You are one of Roys biggest supporters and I respect you. You never bash Brewer you just stick to the facts on both sides. He is lucky to have such a classy person behind him. Just wish some of the other folks could learn from you.
