Score One for the Town Talk!

In today’s issue, the paper slams the Pineville City Council for endorsing H.B. 8, a ridiculous piece of legislation that whines about spending advertisement money with certain newspapers in certain communities. There are a number of problems with this stupid bill (and it doesn’t surprise me that our elected officials here in Alexandria endorsed the bill without checking the facts). From the article:

The truth is that legal advertising — “the legals,” as they are known — are state-mandated public notices that tell taxpayers all kinds of things that are important to them, their families, their neighbors and their future, such as:

 When the school board will vote on a plan to change the attendance zone for the schools your children attend.

 How much you’ll be on the hook for if a town, airport authority or sewer district borrows millions to build the flavor-of-the-day project.

 Whether a planning commission will rezeone the property next to your house so someone can build a … well, we’ll let you fill in the blank.

The truth is that there are sound reasons why state law requires government bodies to publish notices about the public’s business where people can find them easily and where a third party can prove that the notices were, in fact, published.

That place, historically and appropriately, has been in a community’s daily newspaper. In this case, that means The Town Talk.”

This seems like dirty politics, and I think they’re underestimating the Town Talk’s ability to shift opinion.

Keep up the good work.

  1. This is obviously a grudge deal and a dirty payback for certain episodes of unkindness visited on Rep. Farrar, however, there are more than two angles to this story and you can hardly expect the Town Talk to support a measure that would reduce their revenue. (you failed to mention that the Alex. City Council passed a unanimous resolution in enthusiastic support of this bill).

  2. You must be kidding. Look at the history of PROPOSED legislation from this illiterate.
I say “proposed” because unless it is some nothing legislation it never gets passed. This guy just like his bully father have made a career out of using their position to “get back ” at people and pad their own wallet. The only Reason Farrar sponsored the bill was because the Town Talk wisely has never endorsed him for ANYTHING. Did you hear any groundswell of demand for such ??NO….quick….have you ever seen him lobby for any other bills before? NO….he is toast in the next election anyway. After the asswhipping he got in the last Judges race he is done….watch and see.

  3. another bill farrar has introduced is HB18 in which farrar is trying to make it so that an injured party has two years instead of the present one year to file a lawsuit. now if thats shameless we dont know what is.

we have it linked out here.

  4. What is the profit motive for Farrar in this? Gotta be something as he does nothing for nothing.

  5. and that is certainly a stretch based upon the unimpressive legal career of an attorney that has virtually no experience. Can anyone forget the details of Mr Farrars malpractice suits and his lack of trial experience that we all learned about when he ran for Judge?

  6. Could it be that the Town Talk reported the poor qualifications of Mr Farrar and his very poor legislative record and thats why he is trying to hurt them with this new bill? naaaaaa…..Rick really cares about the City of Alexandria using the internet instead of the newspaper to report their minutes. Hey Wait!!…Alexandria isnt even in Mr Farrars District!!!!…This guy is an example of why La is last in everything. We elect the worst of us to represent us.

  7. no we were out of the loop on that one. this blogging “thing” which we have only recently discovered should prove quite interesting, educational, informative and entertaining in the coming months etc.

  8. Hey…take a look at the Pineville.net website and the Alexandria website….they dont keep the things current as it is. How could either keep notices and minutes current WITHOUT hiring someone else to do so???…This Farrar bill is bullshit and when at the end of next year it is shown that it costs MORE then I hope this will be reason 201 to vote for anyone but the idiot…rickster farrar

  9. this guy makes a good point too: Michael Barker of Jena “The Internet is very vulnerable,” the second-semester freshman said. “I don’t think 100 years from now you could go back and see public notices that were posted online. You could go back and see what was published in a newspaper.”

Barker, a self-professed “sort of a watchdog” on public records and meetings issues, said there are numerous dangers in using the Internet for important statements, not the least of which are hackers who can go into Web sites and delete or change the wording on postings.

  10. This is NOTHING more than a little man who is trying to be a bully . In all the years this sorry politician has been in office he has been too damn lazy to spend this much energy on ANYTHING positive. Last year he spent a large part of his time trying to get revenge on the City Marshal by proposing a “local’ bill to screw with his fines collected. By the way..take a look at his financials. This guy is in the pocket of every unsavory political lobbying group there is. Louisiana will NEVER be better until we rid ourselves of such human waste like this Farrar clown.
