Nevermind! I found the information I was looking for concerning Bridgett Brown’s connections to this Cleco scandal. Money is being left out on the table, and Lord knows, our community needs to make sure the right lawyers with the right connections can pick it up.

“Council to hear proposal on Cleco
Billy Gunn By Billy Gunn bgunn@thetowntalk.com
Alexandria’s city attorney today will present a proposal in the city’s lawsuit against Cleco Corp., the council president said Thursday. Council President Charles F. Smith Jr. said he didn’t know what City Attorney Kelvin Sanders would tell the City Council at a special meeting at 11 a.m. today. Sanders did not return a call seeking comment Thursday. The city’s lawsuit leveled many charges of fraud against the utility. It is one of three in which Cleco and Alexandria are entangled. One lawsuit is in state court, one in U.S. District Court, and one is being weighed in both state and federal courts. Last June, Alexandria filed suit in state court alleging a host of fraud charges against Cleco. The lawsuit contained allegations that fall under federal oversight and was promptly sent to U.S. District Court. To represent the city, Sanders appointed four lawyers on a contingency basis who would split 35 percent of any money collected: two Baton Rouge lawyers are under contract to receive 20 percent; Alexandria lawyer Bridgett Brown would get 10 percent. Alexandria lawyer Philip Hunter also was hired for 5 percent of potential awards. But on Dec. 28, Hunter removed himself from the case. A call to Hunter Thursday seeking comment was not returned, and federal court records do not give an explanation. In the most recent lawsuit, Jock Scott represents three former Alexandria officials who have sued the city, claiming wrongful termination. In that lawsuit, divided now in state and federal court, the three men and their wives also claim Alexandria has not demanded an audit with Cleco that would answer how much, if anything, the utility owes city ratepayers. Scott said today’s council meeting might be connected to a Jan. 30 hearing in state court in which council members, Mayor Ned Randolph and others are subpoenaed to appear before Judge Harry Randow. “I’ve had some indications they might be coming around,” Scott said. Scott said court proceedings eventually could lead to an examination of transactions between Cleco and the city by “unbiased” auditors who have no financial stake in finding wrongdoing. Also on Thursday, attorneys for two former Cleco employees met with Sanders. Sanders has said that contract would have to be renegotiated. As of Thursday, the contract had not been rewritten.”

So, let me get this straight: The guys from Cleco, Samsing and Pugh, who came forward with the information will get HALF of the money that Cleco owes our community, and the lawyers will get 35% of the money, 10% of which goes toward Bridgett Brown– who, I remind everyone, is not in good standing with the Louisiana Secretary of State. Now, let me get out my calculator.

35
plus
50
equals
85

So, our community will get 15% of its money back! If Mrs. Brown truly is a public servant, perhaps she could consider working pro bono. And by the way, isn’t she on the England Authority? Doesn’t this present a conflict of interest? Geez. This really blows my mind.

Start at the beginning. Ask Chris or Jacques Roy about the call they got from a certain councilman demanding that they cut Bridgett in on their case. That is Act 1.

It’s not like they’re making an attempt to really hide this b.s. Anyone who has ever driven down Masonic Drive knows that Bridgett works out of Myron’s building.

We should demand full transparency of the work we’re paying Mrs. Brown to perform. This smells like a kickback, but if it’s not, we should be told what EXACTLY we’re paying for.

We’re paying for that goddam Excaliber!

nothing like internet jargon… there’s something else about this story that gets me: isn’t bridgette brown a divorce attorney? or am i making that up?

  9. Anonymous Avatar

not so – she is a criminal attorney on contract to the Indigent Defender Boards or Rapides and Avoyelles Parish. The difficulty with her consulting group’s LLC registration is not a problem. Frequently after an entitiy has served its single purpose (you fill in the blanks) they are left unattended and after a period of not filing reports the charter is revoked.

The interesting thing is what Bridgett is not: a utility attorney, a civil litigator, a bond attorney. But she got the appointments.

  10. Lamar White, Jr. Avatar

Thank you for the information. It definitely clears things up. I think the deal with the consultant group isn’t really about their failure to file an annual report; it’s about their need to form a consulting group in the first place (as someone else has already pointed out).

Yeah, it is obvious that she is not the most qualified appointment for this specific case. I hear that she is actually a terrific attorney, and I don’t mean to discredit her capabilities. But c’mon, we should be honest about this.

  11. Anonymous Avatar

And the first cry she’ll make to any investigation of her will be??? It’s racial!

  12. Anonymous Avatar

… and it probably will be! The issue should not be Brigett but who put her there, how, and most importantly, WHY!

  13. Anonymous Avatar

I know what the issue SHOULD BE, but just as is the case with most blacks these days, the real issue is drowned out by the cry of racism.

  14. Anonymous Avatar

You gotta wonder why people cry racism. “…most blacks these days” I don’t know most blacks. Do you know most blacks?

Statements (and sentiments) like yours enable people to change the focus of discussion from graft, corruption and undue influence to racism. Look at the merits and facts, for god sake.

Do not care how it is perceived. Simple question. Does Brown serve on the England Authority? Does England Authority have contracts with City of Alexandria, Rapides Parish Police Jury or any other entity that Bridgett Brown has personal contracts with? If so then it would be a responsibility of the leadership of each of these entities to determine if she is in violation of any law. I believe that Chuck Fowler just got into trouble because he was on the City Cousil of Alexandria at the same time the City had contracts with people that that Fowler did business with . Talk about racism? What do you think Chuck is feeling about now?

  16. Anonymous Avatar

my guess is – relieved – $2500 fine for what he did is, as Harry Silver says, “chump change”.

Once again, you are following the wrong trail. Is there some common thread with these unmerited oppointments and contracts? Is there some consistent pattern of conduct? If you think the problem is Brigett, you are blinded by the light and thinking way too small. Solve the problem, not the symptom.

  17. Anonymous Avatar

    Kelvin Sanders?

  18. Anonymous Avatar

    a symptom

  19. Anonymous Avatar

    Can we say c-r-o-n-y-i-s-m?

  20. Lamar White, Jr. Avatar

It’s not that we’re following “the wrong trail;” it’s all spelled out for us in plain English. I think what you’re getting to is that this is just the way people have always done things around here… and it has absolutely NOTHING to do with skin color. Indeed, if Bridgett Brown were to argue that this is “racial,” as one person already suggested, it would signal two things:
    1. A reductionistic perspective on her own talents and capabilities. In other words, the argument implies that the ONLY reason anyone would criticize her connections is due to her race… because she, in fact, so strongly defines herself along racial lines that it becomes impossible for her to see the world in any other terms. (We’re seeing the same thing with Cynthia McKinney. McKinney made a mistake, hit a police officer, and then deflected all criticism onto the officer… because she’s a black woman and the officer, a white guy, MUST have been racist by virtue of being white).
    2. A failure to understand the true nature of this appointment and an unwillingness to directly address the specific questions concerning her knowledge of this type of law. Let’s say there is 3 million dollars of money out there; her cut would be $300,000. For that much money, Alexandria could hire the best damn utlities lawyer in the South.

Let’s get real. It’s not about race. White people do the same thing. They hook their friends up with appointments and consultation fees.

The basic fact is that two wrongs don’t make a right.

  21. Anonymous Avatar

When you see a pattern of blacks crying racism when in fact no racism was meant or in fact happened, then you can reasonably draw inferences. I don’t have to know all blacks to know that the first ones who cry it are indeed racists.

Rep. Virginia Fox of North Carolina testified on a local radio talk station that she too has been stopped “several times” by the Capitol security cops to identify herself when entering Fed buildings.

Ms. Fox is an elderly white woman.

But instead of hitting the inquiring police officer or starting a publicity ruckus claiming to be discriminated against because she is elderly and female, Ms. Fox THANKS the officer for the good work he or she does protecting her and her colleagues.

That McKinney did the exact opposite (instead of exercising some common sense and respect for others, especially the police) and still chooses to play the race card despite the facts only proves IMO that she’s delusional or arrogant or both.

The classy thing for Ms. McKinney to have done was thank the officer for being diligent and apologizing for doing such a makeover that NOONE would recognize her!

  22. Anonymous Avatar

And NO, it’s not about race. It’s about doing what’s right. Cynthia McKinney was wrong and instead of admitting she was wrong, she played the race card as do so many like her.

  23. Anonymous Avatar

Lamar, there actually two more reasons that folks might cry “racism”:
    3. It may actually be racism (see previous posts); and
    4. It almost always works.

  24. Lamar White, Jr. Avatar

Agreed. The reason it is so effective is because it clouds up the issue, and soon, people forget what exactly the problem was in the first place.

  25. Anonymous Avatar

Precisely, and that is why you have to frame the issue very carefully to address conduct instead of persons. There are white and black persons but not white and black conduct.

  26. Anonymous Avatar

Pugh and EMS get 20%. I understand that Sansing just works for Pugh or EMS…but according to the Town Talk EMS voluntarily reduced their contract to 20%

  27. Anonymous Avatar

So let me get this straight. Cleco may have stolen millions from us, they pay themselves millions in bonuses and yet we are still doing business with CLECO? WHY?

  28. Anonymous Avatar

That is a good question. Could it be because Charles FEMA Smith works for Sheriff Hilton ( I say work, thats probably not correct, he gets a pay check from Hilton) Hiltons son works for CLECO. Or could it be that Charlie Dewitt has a “special” relationship with someone associated with Clecos interest? Or could it be that the connections Cleco has with certain counselmen of Alexandria , the Mayor of Pineville and the payouts to numerous people is enough to make their illegal activity OK? I bet if the truth comes out there will be more than Cleco people going to jail.

  29. Anonymous Avatar

Come on now. Don’t hold a grudge. Let bygones . . . .etc.
