Chopin House Burns to the Ground
Sad news in Cloutierville, Louisiana: The home of Kate Chopin, the author of The Awakening and one of the first major American women fiction writers, burned to the ground early this morning. It was a total loss. Quoting from The Town Talk: History dates construction of the house by slave labor to 1805 to 1809. Alexis Cloutier was the original inhabitant. Oscar Chopin bought it in 1879 and, years later, moved his wife and their six children to the plantation. Oscar Chopin died in 1882. On Thursday, John Amato of Crooks and Liars interviewed Naomi Klein, author of the critically-acclaimed book The Shock Doctrine. Klein and Amato spoke about the proposed $700 billion Wall Street bailout bill and its potential political implications. Suspending Fundraising?
By now, everyone has heard of John McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign, cease all advertisements and commercials, and halt his fundraising efforts until after the proposed $700 billion Wall Street bail-out bill is passed. Problem is: Despite what’s being reported on other blogs and The Boston Globe, McCain hasn’t suspended fundraising.
