Yesterday, Jacques Roy easily won the Alexandria Mayoral Election, capturing over 76% of the vote against opponent Delores Brewer. I will be offering a detailed precinct-by-precinct analysis later. Last night, I had the privilege of introducing our new mayor to the throngs of supporters (estimated between 500-600 people) who gathered at the Holiday Inn. Here’s what I said (if I had Jacques’s speech, I’d post it too):

Three months ago, a young lawyer named Jacques Roy announced his intentions to run for mayor of Alexandria. It was a daunting task in a crowded field of seven candidates– one of whom had already raised over $100,000, a huge amount for such a small city.

This election, as has been said frequently, was one of, if not the most important election in our city’s history.

It was an election of enthusiasm and ideas. It was an election about holding government accountable. It was an election about our future.

What we’ve witnessed tonight is not merely a single victory for a single candidate; it is representative of a huge movement of people- black and white, young and old, Democrat and Republican, a movement of positivity and energy and vigor, a movement created by people committed to the future of our great city, and a movement that I believe will exist for many years to come.

It is with great pride and honor that I introduce to you Alexandria’s new mayor, Jacques Roy.

(I didn’t stick to the script, but this is what I MEANT to say. Short and sweet).

For now, let’s talk about what’s next.

  1. With the Senate nail-biters I\’m just glad we could go to bed knowing there\’s no recount in Alexandria. [I really wanted to be the first person to comment on this thread.]

  2. “The only orthodox object of the institution of government is to secure the greatest degree of happiness possible to the general mass of those associated under it.” –Thomas Jefferson to M. van der Kemp, 1812. ME 13:135

  3. “With all [our] blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and a prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow citizens–a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.” –Thomas Jefferson: 1st Inaugural, 1801. ME 3:320

  4. “The most sacred of the duties of a government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to all its citizens.”
–Thomas Jefferson: Note in Destutt de Tracy, “Political Economy,” 1816. ME 14:465

  5. Mayor-Elect Roy’s speech was excellent! He is a dazzling speaker. Among the great things about the Roy victory party was the fact that so many young people were there. (20 and 30 somethings) Of course, there were older folks there as well, but at most events of this kind, there aren’t as many younger people. That speaks well for the future of Alexandria! Let’s help our new mayor make Alexandria the best it can be!

  6. Lamar:
Thanks for providing the great venue to share ideas and opinions during the mayor’s race. Keep up the good work. We need dynamic young professionals like you to keep working to move our city forward!

  7. Trough Cleaning Ahead??

It is comforting to see that rational thought prevailed in the mayoral election as evidenced by Mr. Roy’s overwhelming victory. The energy brought to his campaign by the 20-30 and even 40-somethings will be an asset in furthering his goals for the city.
Hopefully he will enjoy whatever goodwill may remain in City Hall during his transition. And finally, there must be some sweet solace in being able to clean the trough of those “blue snouts” who have fed for years off the city coffers. Bon chance Mssr. Roi!!!

  8. I’m an almost 50 Republican that supported and will support Mr. Roy. Is there a place in the youngsters world for me?

Great job on your introduction Lamar.

  9. I believe Mayor-elect Roy will include people of all ages on his team and among his advisors. He’s too smart not to do that! I am a 49 year old supporter. I know he’s going to do a great job!

  10. Good intro, Lamar. Sorry I missed it.

As another nearly 50 supporter, I have great hope for our city with a new mayor and a bright new group of politically active younger folks. I never felt excluded during the campaign by way of my “advanced age”; on the contrary, I was encouraged to share whatever insight and opinions I have on issues. My octogenarian parents are similarly enthusiastic about the future direction of Alexandria under Mayor Roy.

I expect great progress under Jacques’leadership.

  11. i was very dismayed that roy did not reveal his plans for a waterslide in his victory speech. surely that is a big priority.

  12. Roy,

Go for an unmarked police car to tool around in. You can still have the lights and such, but they gotta be the kind they use on the unmarked cars.

Make sure the city swimming pool has lots of aeration pumped in before you get the fish farm going.

  13. Roy is good but your effusive outburst reads like a Jacobin diatribe from Marat in the 1790’s. Let’s give it some time and see what he does. Your blog should continue it’s objective nature to continue it’s effectiveness.

  14. This blog objective? Please!

I suspect that Roy will clean the trough just fine…and replace them with his own group of teat suckers.

  15. WAITINGBEFOREPRAISING, it sounds as though you aren’t ready to get behind the new mayor as your candidate has asked. Jacques Roy asked us last night to forgive our foes and move forward. I intend to try my best and wish you would do the same.

  16. I didn\’t know where to post this, but I thought it should go somewhere. The DailyKos, one of the most visited national politics blogs among the Internets, will be showcasing the Jefferson vs. Carter runoff in Louisiana House District 02. This is considered to be the only significant national election in Louisiana this cycle (and it\’s between two Democrats), and I personally feel it\’s going to reflect heavily on our state. Even though it\’s out of our district, I think people in Central Louisiana will still feel connected to the outcome.

Just as President Bush foretold us of on a number of occasions, Iraq was to be made “ground zero” for the war on terrorism — and just as President Bush said they would, terrorist cells from all over the region are arriving from the shadows of their hiding places and flooding into Iraq in order to get their faces blown off by US Marines rather than boarding planes and heading to the United States to wage war on us here.
A new direction from there means what?

Moreover, bear in mind that all of the above occurred in the face of the 1999 tech crash, the epidemic of corporate scandals throughout the 90’s, and the 9/11/01 terrorist attacks on NYC, years in the planning , which collectively sucked 24 trillions of dollars and 7.8 million jobs out of the US economy even before G. W. Bush had time to unpack his suitcases in the White House. It’s easy to attempt to discredit, disgrace and defame our C ommander-in-Ch ief, George W. Bush; what’s not so easy to do is to refute irrefutable facts, no matter how they might try.
