Lamar -thanks for pointing out the fact that we are paying for this healthcare bill and the current healthcare system largely because we have allowed so many people to get away with using it for free. If you want care, you need to pay something for it. Also, it's dangerous to let people go around thinking that they can just be uninsured and will get great free care. it's not true. You may get care, but you'll get it behind everyone else that's out there with insurance, and you won't be choosing where to get your care, because you'll be dependent on the state or the county. If you develop a serious disease, you are risking alot.

Rich Cashin is still stalking the streets of Portland, selling overpriced crap. Two days ago, using very aggressive sales tactics, he duped me into allowing him to install a "free" security system. For my "free" security system, I signed a contract for monitoring at $46.99 per month for five years. (He said I would be "locked in" at that low price - after some research, I am now aware that $46.99 per month is hardly a low price). My boyfriend read the fine print on the back of the contract which stated that if I terminated my contract early for any reason, I would owe 90% of the total worth of the contract (90% of 60 months at $46.99 per month is $2537!) Fortunately, I am still in the federally mandated three day "cooling off" period and have quickly taken steps to terminate my contract with Silverline Security. Oregon state law (specifically ORS 83.370(1)(c)) requires that door-to-door salesmen leave two copies of a notice of a buyer's right to terminate - however, Rich Cashin did not leave said copies (thereby breaking the law). As such, I was forced to call Silverline Security to find out how to cancel and was told to fax a copy of a letter stating that I cancelled my service. When I attempted to send a fax to number Silverline had given me, the number was out of service. I called Silverline back, was given another number and faxed my letter. I also sent certified letters to three different corporate offices. Hopefully, I am out from under this expensive contract but I won't believe it until they come and get their stuff.

BEWARE of Rich Cashin. He will use ANY angle to gain your trust, regardless of how unscrupulous it is (I mean you, friends of Bill W.). He is, as was stated in an earlier post, a tall, bald man with a Boston accent. Don't engage him in conversation - he is very very persuasive.

Lamar,

Louisiana is one of the poorest states in the United States. Poverty has a direct correlation to crime, particularly violent crime. Therefore, it should not be unexpected we rank highly in this category. Having worked for the criminal justice system for a couple of stints over the years, the biggest problem is the war on drugs. Beyond regulation (and with very strict punishment, mind you) of drugs out of the hands of minors, at a certain point we're going to have to let grown people make their own bad decisions.

The problem is (like the nearly unregulated migration across the southern border of the country) there is a rare, perverse confluence of interests. The traditional right loves the moral high ground of opposing the legalization of drugs (where I can see some sense in continuing to regulate hard drugs - there is simply no logical reconciliation in my mind of a society where alcohol and cigarettes are legal, but marijuana is illegal) because it is "naughty" in unspecified and un-G-dly ways, while the traditional left loves to be the nanny/protector, always trying to shield people from themselves.

THEN there is the business/government intersection that can be so lucrative for the right people at the right time and place. When "for profit" prison companies and elected officials (and in Louisiana, the Sheriff's and District Attorneys remain, overwhelmingly, of the Democratic party) all gain profit and job security from a high incarceration rate, combined with a relatively nonsensical state and national policy regarding controlled dangerous substances, it would be shocking if we had anything OTHER than what was described in the T-P article.

I would make 3 changes that would probably cut our incarceration rate by 1/3 and violent crime across the state by 10 to 15 percent:

1- MASSIVE sentences, even for first offenses, involving drugs of transactional volume, combined with weapons at the same location (like 7 to 10 years, and up). There would be similarly enhanced penalties for transferring drugs to children.

2- Marijuana possession of user quantities would be a fine, akin to a seatbelt. (Full disclosure - I have never used any sort of recreational drug, including marijuana or alcohol - my vice is caffeine.)

3- User quantities of other hard drugs would result in fines and treatment, at least until the 4th or 5th offense before we get into incarceration. I think over time, certain drugs could end up being treated like marijuana in #2 above, but I would be hesitant in shocking the system further these initial changes at first.

I'm not saying this is a panacea, but it would be a reasonable, rational step in the right direction.

"If the bill would have addressed bullying, I would have made sure it passed. But this bill was model legislation used in other states to force school systems to teach elementary school kids about homosexual lifestyles. That would be an embarrassment to Louisiana!! If you would do a little research before going off half cocked, you would see that everything I said yesterday was exactly correct...

There are currently 28 laws, statutes and regulations in Louisiana which prohibit bullying. This bill added nothing except to open our schools to the teaching of the LGBT agenda. I have studied the teachings of Jesus Christ and I agree with his teachings regarding homosexuality. It is a sin plain and simple and it does not need to be taught in our schools. I was taught long ago to avoid getting into a debate with an idiot. It was said that the idiot would simply bring me down to her level and beat me with experience. So, in keeping with my education, I will now discontinue this discussion." ~LA Rep. Alan Seabaugh's response to me on 5/20/11
